Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry

Overview

Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry (BSVM) is a service-focused, faith-based year where modestly paid volunteers serve full-time in both clinical (at a community hospital) and non-clinical (Head Start, middle or high school, and community resource) placements within the Bon Secours Mercy Health System in Richmond, VA or in Baltimore, MD. They live in community with one another, and staff accompanies volunteers through an ecumenical spiritual formation curriculum over the year that touches on faith, justice, service, community, simplicity, and discernment.

Size: 10-12 volunteers annually (4-6 each city)

Locations: Baltimore, MD & Richmond, VA

Placements: Public health ministry focused on improving health and social determinants of health for neighbors. BSVM emphasizes building relationships through patient-/student-interactions at each site, cultivating a compassionate presence with every person. Examples include:

• Hospice home volunteer
• Early childhood center aide
• Emergency room patient liaison
• Behavioral Health Unit volunteer
• High School Student Support
• Housing and development community organizer

Living Arrangements: Program-provided houses located in the two neighborhoods where volunteers serve

Financial Component

• Modest monthly stipend, used for food and other expenses
• Housing, transportation, and insurance provided
• Anticipated AmeriCorps Education Award (in 2024)

Application Process

Timing:

• Early Decision: Dec 1st
• Round 1 Deadline: Jan 15th
• Rolling deadlines every 15th of month through April (and beyond as needed)

Process:

• Brief Interest Form followed by initial Preliminary Discussion with staff
• Full Application (inc. three references)
• Interviews with staff (two conversations totaling 2-3 hours)
• Offer/Commitment
• City & placement finalized in early summer
